C.B.S. Primary School, Clounalour
Newsletter May 2024
Dear Parents,
The final term in our school is always a busy one and this year is no different! I have devised a CBS Primary School calendar containing a plan for the final two months of the school term in the hope that parents have advanced notice of tours, sports days, school closures, etc.

Traffic – Tráchta
I would be grateful to all our parents if you would keep the safety of all the school community foremost in your mind when driving and please avoid parking near the school gates. With the children’s safety in mind, in the morning and at home time, please ensure that children avoid the car access gate area due to deliveries etc at that gate. We want to again, say a special thank you to our school caretaker Jerome, for his guidance in getting the children across the road safely, at both the morning and after school times. Please avail of his assistance when crossing the road.
Active Schools Week
Active Schools week will take place from Monday 27th to Friday 31st of May this year. The children will participate in a variety of activities including Gymnastics, Swimming, Boxing, Hurling, Soccer, GAA & Basketball.
Sports Days will be held during this week also along with a school walk on Friday 31st May. This week will give the children the opportunity to try new activities and enjoy being active together. The emphasis will be on participation and fun with a little bit of competition!!
These days are designed to provide participation opportunities and are sure to be fun for all! Please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothes/footwear/sun-cream/rain jacket if required for these days. Please provide your child with an extra drink on the day. A small towel and a change of socks would be handy also.
Swimming
By now, many of our pupils have received letters about swimming, and some have already started and completed their swimming sessions in the Tralee Sports Complex. Please note your child’s dates / times so that we can avoid phone calls in the morning when children forget their swimming gear.
Many thanks to those parents who have volunteered to help with the younger children.
School Uniform
We would ask you to ensure your child wears his / her complete school uniform each day during this final term. School uniform consists of grey trousers / skirt, white shirt, school jumper and school tie – school tracksuit should be worn on P.E. days and other days specified by the class teacher. White polo tops should be worn under the school tracksuit top – no jerseys / coloured tops allowed. Your cooperation with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Confirmation
One of the big days for many of our 6th class pupils has come and gone – Confirmation Friday 1st March. Congrats to the boys and girls who were confirmed and well done to all the staff members who were involved in preparing the children – you did a great job!
First Communion
The children making their first Communion are busy getting ready with their teachers for Saturday May 11th at 10:30am. The Parents’ association will provide a “cup of tea” in the parish centre after the ceremony.
Photography Competition
Photography Competition for 5th and 6th classes, May 2024. Creative practitioner Tara Donoghue Photography returns this year to give the students a workshop on photography skills. The students will be invited to partake in a competition titled “Happiness is..” and will be encouraged to explore their local community and capture images through their own eyes. Prizes will be allocated in different categories at the end of the month. Unleash your creative side!
Student Council
Some members of our Student Council along with teachers Mr. Costello and Miss Ryle recently attended the Edmund Rice Student Council Conference and “Walk In My Shoes” Conference 2024 in Blarney Street Primary School, Cork. They met with over 150 other children from 32 different schools and engaged in various activities around the theme of “Unity”. The children represented CBS Primary and the Student Council so well. We are very proud of them!
Our student council also recently engaged in a zoom call with the student council of St Mary’s College Preparatory School in Liverpool where each school discussed different initiatives their student councils have been involved in. We will link up again via zoom very soon and plan on working on together on a project in the coming months.
A big thank you. You are all Pawsome!
Zorro and Daithí are delighted to announce that the cake sale made the most money ever – over €1,000. Well done to everyone who supported them, by baking, helping, and buying the delicious treats!
Congratulations to Ms O Flaherty who abseiled off a roof in Croke Park and raised lots of money for the charity My Canine Companion who sponsor our school dogs!!
Spanish Lessons
Our Senior classes are very busy learning Spanish with Maria our teaching student on placement from Valencia, Spain and Marisa a local Spanish Tutor as part of the “Say Yes to Languages” module. The “Say Yes to Languages” Module aims to introduce a modern foreign language to senior classes at primary level while also generates awareness among pupils about other languages used by their classmates and promotes diversity and inclusion. Hopefully the children will all speak “un poco de Espanol”
School of Sanctuary
We were delighted to recently welcome to our school a number of teachers and student council members from The Green secondary school. As they are commencing their School of Sanctuary journey, we were only more than happy to discuss with them the process involved in becoming a Champion School of Sanctuary like us! We gave them a tour of our school and highlighted all the different initiatives that we are involved in. It was great to see some past pupils amongst the faces!
FAI Soccer
Our boys’ and girls’ soccer teams participated in the FAI Schools County Finals held at Mounthawk Park. All four teams performed remarkably well, and we are immensely proud of their efforts. Congratulations to all those involved, and a special mention to Killorglin NS for their triumph in both tournaments! Thank you to Mr. D O’Connor and Mr. Costello for coaching the teams.
Class Leagues
Class soccer leagues will start next month. Children will play with / against the other children from their class level. On the days of their matches all football gear should be brought in a separate sports bag. They will be informed by their teachers of the days they will be involved in their matches.
Basketball
Well done to our CBS Primary girls’ & boys’ basketball teams who competed in recent weeks in Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School. Our girls’ team put in tremendous performances against Blennerville N.S. & Gaeilscoil Mhic Easmainn. Congratulations to our boys’ team who won the Plate Final vs O’Brennan N.S. on a scoreline of 16-11. Thanks to Daniel Jokubatis for his sessions throughout the year. A special word of thanks to staff members Mr. E O Connor and Mrs Boyle and the CBS Primary staff, parents, and supporters on the day. Well done to all involved!
School Tours
The emphasis placed on school tours in this school can be clearly linked with the “Outdoor and Adventure Activities” section of the physical education programme for primary schools.
This year our classes are heading off to local amenities such as: national parks, adventure centres and other exciting places. We hope to have reports of these tours on the school Facebook page.
